CAR SAFETY

The first step to prevent accidentally leaving a child in the car is awareness. Internal temperatures of a car can reach lethal levels in a short period of time. The temperature increases every 10-20 minutes by 20 degrees. All it takes is a shift in routine, a silent, sleeping baby, or no reminders in the front seat that you have your child in the car. Accidental car related deaths happen to parents from all walks of life and even smart, loving, safety-obsessed parents. â€‹Roughly 37 infants and toddlers die from being left or trapped in cars every year and this adds up to roughly one per week from spring to fall.

Infants and young children can succumb to heatstroke very quickly. Heatstroke is when a person's body temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit and their body becomes overwhelmed. The symptoms of heatstroke  include dizziness, disorientation, agitation, confusion, sluggishness, seizure, hot dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, loss of consciousness, rapid heart beat, and hallucinations. Cell damage and organ failure can occur when the core body temperature is 107 degrees Fahrenheit or greater; this can easily result in death.

Children are not able to regulate their body temperatures as  well as adults, so their body temperatures can warm at a rate 3 to 5 times faster than adults.

The biggest mistake a parent can make is thinking it won't happen to them.

Steps You Can Take To Save A Child

1. Look before you lock

Open the door and check the backseat every time you get out of your car

2. Keep something you need in the backseat

Put things such as your cell phone, briefcase, computer, lunch, ID badge, or shoe next to your child

4. Always lock car doors and keep keys away from children

Make sure your car doors are always locked so a wandering child cannot get trapped inside

5. Have a plan with childcare provider

Set a plan for someone to call to check up on your child if they do not show up for daycare without notice

Parents can never be too cautious when it comes to making sure they do not leave their child in the car. In addition to the above steps to help prevent heat related car deaths, you can look into our Car Seat Sensor on our Products Page!
